Volkswagen is continuing with its strategy of building powerful yet small-engined Amarok vehicles. First were the diesel double cabs, and now the petrol has joined them. Displacing only 2.0-litre, the turbo TSI delivers only one power output, unlike the diesel which has a choice of two.
The TSI delivers 118kW between 3800 rpm and 5500rpm. The maximum torque of 300Nm comes in at 1600rpm and is available up to 3750rpm. While some might question whether the Amarok can handle high loads on such a small engine, it is worth noting that the engine with direct injection, variable valve timing and a constantly variable vane turbocharger, has an operating pressure of 190 bar.
Sending power to the wheels is a 6-speed manual gearbox. In late 2012 a second transmission in the form of an automatic, will be made available. VW says the Amarok 2.0 TSI averages 9.6 litres per 100km in petrol consumption, giving it a range of about 830km from a full tank.
The Volkswagen Amarok 2.0 TSI 4x2 costs R301 400.
