Fiat Auto South Africa is getting ready to introduce the Alfa Romeo MiTo to the Mzansi public. Launch is said to be next month (July). Frankly I don’t have prices at the moment and I just don’t feel like thumb-sucking them either. But what you should know about the MiTo is that it is the real MINI rival, unlike the underpowered Fiat 500.
Speaking of power, the MiTo will most certainly have the new 1.4-litre TJet turbo engine from the Grande Punto worth at least 88kW. That would place it ahead of MINI’s 1.6-litre which also has 88kW but would fare less at Gauteng altitude where most Mzansi car buyers live. Alfa recently launched new power figures for the 1.4 which give it three levels of power; 77kW, 99kW and 125kW. Just imagine, a 1.4 with as much power as a 2.0-litre!
There’s also talk of a 179kW GTA model but I don’t think that particular model would come to South Africa since the economy is what it is right now.
