L.A. was the scene of the sexy and the obscene, some of which will be seen on our roads as early as December this year. Falling sharply into the category of the sexy is the facelifted Volkswagen Eos, a topless coupe cabriolet based on the underpinnings of, among others, the previous generation Golf. The Eos, considered the class-leader in its segment, came to Mzansi three years ago and will soon be replaced by this minor surgically-enhanced version.
Changes include a new front grille with new bi-xenon headlights and the now-familiar VW family face. LED daytime running lights that every new premium car currently has, are featured here too. In Europe there are three different wheel sizes ranging from 16-inch to 17-inch. I think SA will adopt the fewer-choices strategy, including for the wheels and tyres.
The interior has new trim on the dashboard and the doors to make it look more luxurious and attractive. Even the gear lever has been redesigned in this inside shakeup.
This being a cabriolet means the roof can be completely opened. It takes 25 seconds to get that done via a button in the centre console. Alternatively cars fitted with the optional Keyless Access system can open through the press of the car key.
Engines are of course always key with cars and the new 2011 Eos benefits from four of them. Last on the list is the turbocharged 1.4 TSI petrol packing 90kW and 200Nm at 1500rpm. Higher than that is another 1.4 TSI now with the added power of both a supercharger and a turbo, kicking out 118kW and maximum torque of 240Nm at 1500rpm. Top of the heap is a 2.0-litre TSI having the same amount of power as a Golf GTI and Scirocco, that is 155kW and 280Nm of torque. In between is a turbo diesel with 103kW and 320Nm. VW SA will probably not even think about bringing this one over here, given our general aversion to fuel-saving cars and all.
Look out for this updated Eos on South African roads from the second quarter of 2011.
