NEW BMW X3: MZANSI PRICES, ENGINES ANNOUNCED

BMW has released prices for the all-new X3 well ahead of its public launch. In an unprecedented move, BMW South Africa sent out a press release detailing everything regarding the X3, including prices, engines, standard and optional equipment.

Only two models will be available at launch. They are the xDrive20d and the xDrive35i. Both feature the xDrive AWD system plus an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard. The basic xDrive20d knocks in at R463 000 and its sibling with the Exclusive pack will cost
R499 300.  An xDrive35i, currently the range-topper, will hit the pocket at R598 000 standard and R629 600 with the Exclusive package.

The xDrive20d of course feature a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine making 135kW at 4000rpm and peak torque of 380Nm between the relatively short band of 1750rpm and 2750rpm. BMW says it will take off from standstill to 100km/h in 8.5 seconds and stop the needle at 210km/h. Combined fuel consumption is said to be 5.6 litres per 100km and C02 emissions are 147g/km.

An xDrive35i has the makings of quite the handy little super SUV with its 3.0-litre petrol turbo motor kicking out 225kW at 5800rpm and 400Nm between 1200rpm and 5000rpm. The 0 – 100km/h dash goes by in 5.7 seconds and top speed is 245km/h. Average fuel consumed every 100km is 8.8 litres and C02 emissions are 204g/km.

The X3 can be ordered in one of ten different exterior colours (8 of which are metallic), six wheel styles ranging between 17-inch and 19-inches wide, rain sensors, xenon lights, keyless engine start, iDrive, an optional 6- DVD changer, TV tuner and Bluetooth connectivity.

While the X1 has taken over the mantle of baby BMW SUV or SAV in every sense, the X3 seems quite steeply priced, especially the xDrive35i. We specified a standard xDrive35i with most items on the options lists and ended up with an X3 priced at R814 000! I reckon, and I’m speculating here, that by the time the facelift model comes around in late 2013 our specced car will tip R1 million.

Initial take-up will obviously be high because of badge allure but considering that constant future price increases are guaranteed, the X3 might begin to struggle in the sales department pretty quickly.
