Audi is unashamedly the quintessential anti-BMW. “What BMW can do we can do better” is how one Audi executive once put it to me. It is in this spirit that Audi Chairman Rupert Stadler announced that the next-generation A8 will be the sportiest luxury sedan in its class and that it will set new standards in terms of interiors. Funny enough Jaguar promises the same for the new XJ. The car competes in the same space as the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and said Jaguar XJ. Stadler said the A8 will be revealed sometime this November.
Below the A8 is news of the A5 Sportback, a car of whose positioning in the Audi stable I’m not yet sure of. As the name suggests it is in the A5 family but is more practical because of its four doors and interior space usage. Where that leaves the A4 Avant I’m not quite certain. The A5 Sportback will be unveiled in Europe within the next couple of months and goes on sale there before the year is over. Pictured here is the Audi Sportback on which it may be roughly based.
Stadler also made known the fact that the A1 will be launched in 2010. The A1 will be the smallest Audi in the range. Its main primary target is the MINI range, the next-generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class (said to be flatter and thus sportier than the current one) as well as the Alfa Romeo MiTo.
The year 2011 will see the introduction of the Q3, a compact SUV aimed at the upcoming BMW X1.
