This 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa may not look like much to the skinny eye but it now holds the record for the most expensive car ever sold on auction. Last week at Ferrari’s Maranello factory the car went under the hammer for US$12.1 million (about R103 million). That’s right, that’s just a tenth of a billion in Rand. For one car.
Previously owned by an American collector, the 250 Testa Rossa was one of only 22 ever made. They raced in 19 international meetings and won 10 of them. This particular car was raced by its owner in a number of races.
Ferrari is getting used to these records. Last year it shattered the existing record for a car sold on auction when a 1961 250 GT SWB California Spider was sold for US$10.9 million (US$92 million).
