South African sisters Lola and Megan Verlaque of Johannesburg, who finished fourth in the FIA African Rally Championship last year, start their 2009 campaign in the opening round of the African Rally Championship, Rally of Tanzania, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (February 20 to 22).
The sisters, known affectionately as the Rally Chicks, will be debuting their new rally car, the ex-Jon Williams class S2000 VW Polo, before making their first appearance in an S2000 car in the opening round of the Sasol SA Rally Championship, the TOTAL Tour Natal on March 13 and 14.
“We’re very excited about acquiring the S2000 Polo. It’s a big step up for us into the premier class, where we will be competing head-on with the factory Volkswagens and Toyotas in South Africa this season,” said Lola. “Megan and I have a good record in Tanzania – we’ve come third overall for the past two years in production class cars – so we hope to maintain this level of performance and get to know our new car before the domestic season starts in March.”
Father Eddie and sister Megan have a four-day road trip towing the Polo behind their trusty Mercedes-Benz Vito to the start of Rally Tanzania in Dar es Salaam. Lola will fly to Tanzania on Tuesday (February 17).
The rally starts with a 1.26km Super Special stage in Dar es Salaam on Friday (February 20). There are seven special stages covering some 163km south of Dar es Salaam on Saturday and a further five stages covering 120 km on Sunday, with the finish of the 596km event (283km special stages and 313km liaison) back in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.
