Audi has priced the brand new S4 Avant for the Mzansi
market. The S4 Avant is based on the S4
range which has ditched its V8 roots for a more compact, but
ultimately punchier V6. South Africa
being what it is with our loathing of wagons, Audi SA will be offering the car
in limited offer, so hurry up and order one!
To recap what this wagon is packing under the bonnet, let’s
go through the stats. A 3.0-litre V6
engine powers all four wheels through the quattro
AWD system. It in turn, is belt-driven by a supercharger such that it delivers a sweet 245kW of power, as well as 440Nm
of pulling torque in the process. Audi claims a 5.2 second 0 – 100km/h sprint, and from experience, they are
probably very close to the real-world figure.
S4 Avant, whose only direct rival in Mzansi is the Volvo V60 T6 R-Design Polestar,
features 19-inch alloy wheels,
xenon-plus headlights, some brushed aluminium
bits on the exterior, four round
exhaust tailpipes as per the usual S order, special aprons, a 7-speed S tronic gearbox with quick
shifts and so on and so on.
We think it’s a pity that South Africans are such wagon-phobes as cars like the S4 Avant
show what a performance wagon can offer in terms of practicality, space,
comfort and kick-you-on-the-ass
ability.
The Audi S4 Avant is now available at a cost of R637 000. Frankly we expected it
to be higher.
