The Chevrolet Sonic
was launched in Mzansi a couple of months ago as a small hatch above the Aveo. We don’t quite see the point of
selling similar-sized hatchbacks at the
same time, but GM SA probably know what they are doing. Now the car has been
made exciting with the announcement
of the Sonic RS.
Set to debut at the 2012
North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month, the Sonic RS
will feature GM’s 1.4-litre petrol turbo
engine as a source of power. It delivers 103kW
and 200Nm of torque sent to the
front wheels through either a 6-speed
manual or automatic gearbox. If Mzansi gets this car in 2012 we’ll expect
it to be manual-only.
At launch it will feature four exterior colours, including one called Victory Red (pictured here). Other stand-out bits include new fog lights, RS badges all over, a new sports steering wheel with a flat
bottom, aluminium sports pedals, a unique
RS front grille, new rear spoiler, and 17-inch
wheels among others.
