BMW South Africa will start selling the ActiveHybrid 5 here in 2012. The car will mark the company’s first hybrid offering to ever hit these
shores, promising V8 performance with straight-six
fuel consumption. Hopefully we’ll be able to take a closer look at BMW’s JIMS
stand if the car is on exhibit.
Powering the ActiveHybrid 5 is mainly the 3.0-litre twin
turbo petrol secreting 225kW and 400Nm. Add to that the 40kW and 210Nm ushered out by the electric motor, and you have a total
system output of 250kW and 450Nm. It is said the car will accelerate from standstill to 100km/h
in just 5.9 seconds, and an average
fuel consumption figure of 7 litres per 100km. At that level you’d be looking
at about 950km from a full tank. This isn’t one of those plug-in hybrids so you
will not be able to recharge it through the garage wall power socket.
In full hybrid mode the car will travel for about 4km at a
top speed of 60km/h, making it
ideally suited for traffic-congested
cities like Jozi.
