TopGear magazine
is coming to Mzansi! For a few months it was said to be firmly in the hands of
Sunday Times and Sunday World
publisher AVUSA. But now it has been
confirmed to be NASPERS, the publisher
of such magazines at TopCar, You and
Drum. The deal comes after only a few weeks of negotiations between the two
parties, following the disintegration
of talks between BBC Magazines and AVUSA.
“Top Gear is the biggest motoring media brand in the world.
We're very excited about working with BBC Magazines in bringing this highly
enriched experience in motoring magazine
journalism to South Africa,” John
Relihan, CEO of Media24 (owned by NASPERS) magazines said.
The new editor of Top Gear SA will be Pierre Steyn, who has been editing TopCar magazine for the past four
years. There is no word on what type of content we can expect from the TGSA,
suffice to say it will not only feature local
stories but will also draw upon the BBC TopGear mother ship. The cover
price - currently at about R140 for
the fully imported current Top Gear
magazine - was also not mentioned. Mind you, its biggest Mzansi rivals CAR and
TopCar sell at about R30 a piece.
Top Gear SA will be on the newsstands across the country
from 24 October.
