ACURA SHOWS PRODUCTION ZDX CROSSOVER

Honda’s luxury division Acura is branching out into the unknown by introducing the ZDX crossover vehicle. Based on the ZDX Concept car first seen at the 2009 New York Auto Show, the car is a mix of coupe and SUV. Sounds familiar? Oh yes, the opinion-splitting BMW X6 – which I rather like very much – seems to have inspired a new trend.

Anyway, the ZDX features a heightened suspension system, sloping rear design, a snoopy yet kinky front grille and a hidden rear door handle. Standard with all models is the panoramic glass sunroof. It comes running on 17-inch wheels and has Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) system. How much of an off-road car it is is only something that buyers will be able to attest. Nevertheless I don’t suspect it will match any of the Land Rovers or Jeeps on the rough stuff.

Acura is quite comfort-conscious so they made three trim levels available for sale. There’s the ZDX, a ZDX with Technology Package and the ultra premium ZDX with Advance Package. Each trim choice comes with its own set of gadgets and standard features. But all three have a USB audio interface, Bluetooth connectivity, a hand-stitched leather dashboard, an iPod connection and a radio/ CD player combo.

Fitted in the engine bay is a 3.7-litre V6 that makes 221kW (300hp) and maximum torque of 366Nm. Mated to it is a 6-speed automatic gearbox that can also be accessed through paddles behind the steering wheel.

No prices for the ZDX have been announced yet but when it enters the North American market this coming winter (summer in South Africa) it will be placed between the MDX luxury SUV and the RL luxury sedan which cost a minimum of US$40 990 (R321 500) and US$46 830 (R367 400) respectively.
