BMW South Africa has expanded the X6 range with a new flagship model, the xDrive50i which was launched to the media last week. The X6 xDrive50i combines BMW’s legendary handling attributes with a new twin turbo engine whose power figure is the stuff of sports cars.
That engine is the 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 petrol and it produces peak power of 300kW (408hp) between 5500rpm and 6400rpm. Maximum torque is 600Nm and all of it is available on tap from 1750rpm right up to 4500rpm. Coupled with the plant is a 6-speed automatic gearbox which can be actuated semi-automatically via either the gear lever at the centre console or the paddles behind the steering wheel.
All power is sent to all four wheels via the xDrive 4x4 system. It is then distributed between the front and rear axles depending on prevailing road conditions using the patented Dynamic Performance Control. Handling is vastly improved and even novice drivers should find it relatively simple control in most conditions. BMW says xDrive50i will accelerate from 0 – 100km/h in 5.4 seconds and run out of breath at the usual 250km/h. Average fuel consumption is said to be 12.5 litres per 100km and C02 emissions are an expectedly high 329 g/km.
In shape the X6 is still the same Sports Activity Coupé with wide wheel arches, four doors, an interior with four seats, and a high waistline. Differentiating it from lesser models like the xDrive35d are two larger exhaust pipes that apparently emit a sporty, growling sound.
Standard features, in addition to the expected bits like power steering and electric windows, include a self-levelling rear axle, a reversing camera, a glass sunroof, the Professional Navigation system, Hi-Fi system with Digital Sound Processor and 6-DVD changer, Park Distance Control, xenon headlights with headlight washer system, an automatic tailgate operation and cruise control with brake function.
Until the 408kW X6 M arrives this is the car to rule BMW’s SUV, oops sorry, SAV range.
