Volkswagen brand has the R Division, a performance side that produces cars like the heavy Golf R and the scintillating Scirocco R. From recent spy pictures
also, it appears there will be a Polo R too, probably delivering about the same
amount of power as a Golf GTI (155kW).
Recently American publication Autoblog sat down with R GmbH General Manager Ulrich Richter and asked him a few questions. He didn’t particularly like answering a lot of the probing futuristic questions apparently, but did say something to the effect that diesel and all-wheel-drive (AWD) will form the division’s core focus in future. He also said diesel cars can be as efficient as hybrids (we believe they already are- ed) if they can lose up to 100kg. Incidentally the 188kW Golf R weighs up to 150kg more than the Golf GTI, so perhaps they could start there.
