VOLKSWAGEN SA INTRODUCES NEW POLO SEDAN

Almost 18 months after launching the new-generation Polo hatch to the Mzansi market, Volkswagen SA has followed up with the new Polo sedan. Polo sedan is more about practicality, about the little Polo growing up from entry-level runabout to a more serious transport proposition for the motorist who now demands less flash for similar style and value.

Two trim choices, Trendline and Comfortline are available. Customers will be getting a flat front grille with two chrome louvers, colour-coded front bumpers, and foglights with a chrome trim on Comfortline models.

Three engines with different power outputs and purposes are on the menu. The lowest-level is a 1.4-litre naturally aspirated motor with 63kW at 5000rpm and 132Nm at 3600rpm. A 5-speed manual transmission is given as standard, while a 6-speed Tiptronic can be had with the 1.6-litre Comfortline model. VW claims average fuel consumption of 5.9 litres per 100km and C02 emissions of 139g/km. a sprint time of 12.8 seconds or more can be expected for the 0 – 100km/h run.

Then we have another petrol in the 1.6-litre, with 77kW made at 5250rpm and peak torque of 155Nm available at 3500rpm. Acceleration from 0 – 100km/h is 11.1 seconds and top speed 190km/h. A combined fuel average of 6 litres per 100km is stated.

At the top of the pile is a 77kW 1.6 TDI stretching out 250Nm of torque between 1500rpm and 2500rpm, and averaging 4.6 litres per 100km in fuel consumption or getting about 1200km from its 55 litre diesel fuel tank. C02 emissions are at 120 g/km which means the 1.6 TDI is exempt from government C02 tax.

Forget about a Polo GTI sedan though, there hasn't been one in the past and there's no reason to suggest one is on its way this time.

As far as interior equipment is concerned the Polo sedan is decked out with air conditioning, power steering, and all-round electric windows. This being an entry-level sedan, there isn’t much in the way of options but there are a few, including a CD player with MP3 functionality.

Total car length is 4.38 metres, width is 1.7m, height is at 1.47m and the wheelbase is a spacious 2.55m. Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP) is offered as standard in the 1.6TDI Comfortline and as an option in the 1.6 Comfortline. Other standard safety features that are available across the range include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). There’s also four airbags including two side airbags.

The new Volkswagen Polo Sedan range comes standard with a 3 year/120 000km warranty and a 12 year Anti-Corrosion warranty.

A 5 year/ 60 000km Volkswagen Automotion Maintenance Plan as well as a 5 year/ 60 000 km Service Plan are available as options.
