BMW has released some details about its next small petrol engine. The four-cylinder petrol unit has one turbocharger with BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology which is claimed to offer a great balance between power and fuel consumption. Displacing 2.0-litres (1997 cc) in capacity, the engine will have its first taste of public life in the X1 xDrive28i.
Maximum power is 180kW at 5000rpm, while peak torque is a forceful 350Nm. Planted in the 6-speed manual xDrive28i it helps the car move from 0 – 100km/h in a claimed 6.1 seconds, while the 8-speed automatic achieves 6.5 seconds over the same period. Average fuel consumption is said to be 7.9 litres per 100km, and C02 emissions of 183g/km are officially recorded.
The new 2.0-litre turbo engine is the first of a number of small four-cylinder turbos from the BMW brand, including the 1.6-litre turbo already used in the MINI Cooper S range. I expect these two engines to form the backbone of near-future BMW products and both should be configurable to produce different power outputs for different models. We should also see the 2.0-litre in upcoming 128i, 328i, X3 xDrive28i and 528i models.
