OFFICIAL: MERCEDES-BENZ CLS SHOOTING BRAKE COMES IN 2012

Official confirmation has been documented regarding the launch of the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake, which is based on this CLS Shooting Brake Concept that you see here. Merc bosses say the overwhelming response the new CLS is receiving, as well as what people said about the Concept, were enough to get them thinking seriously about production.

The car will be assembled at the company’s Sindelfingen plant which currently manufactures, among others, the CLS, S-Class Coupe, the SLS AMG and Maybach cars.

“The CLS still makes waves with its fascinating design and wows customers for our brand,” Dr Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz Cars. “With the new generation of the CLS we expand our pioneering role in this segment. We aim to extend this success story with the CLS Shooting Brake and complement our product portfolio with another appealing model. This car is based on the great tradition of a stylish, cultivated sportiness which has always characterised the great Mercedes Coupés, and it takes this unique legacy an exciting step further. At the same time it points the way towards the future design idiom of Mercedes-Benz.”

No further details were announced. Judging from its illustrious company the car will share engines with a host of top-end Mercedes-Benz products such as the CLS itself, the E-Class and the S-Class. Therefore we should expect to see a 3.5-litre V6 petrol, a 3.0-litre turbo diesel (perhaps even a new V6 twin turbo diesel?), Hybrid, new 4.7-litre twin turbo with 350kW and the new 5.5-litre twin turbo with 400kW.

The new Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake will go on sale in Europe in 2012 and hopefully in Mzansi later in the same year or in early 2013.
