Following an accident in Pretoria on Monday when a 4-month old baby was flung from a car by the impact of a crash during an illegal drag race, Motorsport South Africa (MSA), the controlling body of all forms of motorsport in the country, once again condemned illegal racing and unsanctioned motorsport events.
Mr Francois Pretorius, CEO of MSA, says it is horrendous that the lives of an innocent family were endangered when one of the cars who participated in an illegal drag race in Voortrekker Road, Pretoria, crashed into their car.
MSA re-iterated the importance of competing in a controlled environment, with the necessary safety measures in place.
“Drag Racing as a facet of motorsport has with the Illegal2Legal program created a platform for Joe Public to race his/her car at venues according to regulations which provided the safest possible way for both competitors and spectators. It is a participative form of motorsport, which is not costly and very accessible”, he said.
Organisers of any form of motor racing, as well as the land owners on whose property these events take place, should ensure that it is done under the umbrella of MSA.
Illegal Drag Racing remains a huge problem for the authorities and MSA will continue to work with them to provide safe alternatives to channel the energies of enthusiasts in a correct and safe manner.
Ruben Fourie (4 months), the youngest child of Inspector Chris Fourie, a Pretoria metro police officer, suffered two skull fracture and brain haemorrhage, and is in a stable condition. Fourie’s wife and two other children were admitted and treated with minor injuries.
