NEXT VW POLO REVEALED

South Africa will be getting the new Volkswagen Polo in early 2010. Here we have a bit of information about the car which has just been revealed in Europe. It goes on sale there in a few weeks time.

The new Polo is 54mm longer, 32mm wider and 14mm lower than the current model but its wheelbase is longer as well meaning more interior space. VW says over 10.6 million Polos have been sold worldwide since it began selling five generations ago.

Five new engines are to be made available with the Polo. The smallest is the 1.2 MPI with a barely adequate 44kW. I doubt this engine will make it to Mzansi since it’s so underpowered. Next up is the 1.2 TSI with a turbo which produces 77kW and has a claimed average fuel consumption figure of 5.5 litres per 100km. As expected a turbo diesel also makes its appearance in the form of a 1.6 TDI making 55kW, 66kW and 77kW, depending on the model.

Other key features include the new 7-speed DSG which appears in the Polo for the first time. Then there is the standard ABS while ESP is standard in Europe. Hopefully we also get the Euro-spec cars. There are optional audio and satellite navigation systems similar to those found in the Tiguan and Golf VI.

The Polo is one of Mzansi’s biggest selling vehicles. In fact it is the biggest selling passenger car in the country. Judging from these specs and pictures that trend will continue, depending of course on how it is priced.

If VW SA prices it well then there’s no reason it should not stay atop the sales charts and even make it to the finals of the 2010 South African Guild of Motoring Journalists’ Car of the Year competition.
