Alpina is one of the best-known BMW tuners in the world. With this “Christmas” present, they are showing us a sneak preview of what is to come from the company. The car, probably to be badged a BMW Alpina B7 S, will be based on a modified new 7 Series model and possibly its 4.4-litre V8 engine. Not only does Alpina change engine characteristics but they modify exterior and interior looks as well.
What Alpina does best though is to strap powerful superchargers on normal BMWs so they not only gain much welcome power, but also greater amounts of torque. For example a 650i has been modified by Alpina to produce 390kW and 725Nm from its 4.4-litre V8, making it more powerful than the 378kW flagship M6. The standard car can only manage 270kW.
Likewise, BMW’s standard 3.0-litre twin turbo engine in the 335i makes 225kW (400Nm), but Alpina’s has been tuned to a hefty 265kW and 500Nm.
I’ve been reliably told by one of BMW’s most senior German executives that his company is building an M7 for the first time. Over 400kW will be yielded from its powerplant and its main target will be the Mercedes-Benz S 63/ 65 AMG.
