We always knew Mercedes-Benz would pluck that new 5.5-litre twin turbo V8 into the E 63 AMG, but we always assumed it would be later, you know, at facelift time. But E-Class facelift time is still some 18 months or so away. Yet, in Germany the E 63 AMG now sports this frothing engine. Could the upcoming BMW M5 have been a catalyst perhaps? Or was it always the plan to cut into the car’s life cycle with this engine?
Whatever the case, the engine replaces the old naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 with 386kW but apparently keeps the same power figure in normal configuration, although fuel efficiency is reportedly better at a claimed 9.8 litres per 100km. However, the optional AMG performance package perks things up to 410kW, which is very sweet in any language.
