VW UNVEILS POLO GTI AT 2010 GENEVA SHOW

Here you go mini hot hatch fans, the all-new Volkswagen Polo GTI. The small performer features nice bits like LED daytime running lights, an electric panoramic sunroof, bi-xenon headlights and more. But I don’t know which of these will be standard garb on the Mzansi model.

The GTI is powered by a 1.4 TSI unit with twincharger technology (supercharger and turbo) to make 132kW at 6200rpm and 250Nm between 2000rpm and 4500rpm. A 0 - 100km/h sprint time of 6.9 seconds is claimed, while average fuel consumption is said to be 5.9 litres per 100km. VW saw it fit to use a 7-speed DSG for the little car, instead of offering that old 5-speed manual.

Power is sent to the front wheels through 5-hole 7Jx17 rims with 215/40 R17 87V tyres. The Golf GTI’s XDS system is included in order to improve handling and help the car corner better. If it works as well in this as it does in the Golf then we can expect exceptional handling characteristics.

Europe will get a choice between a 3-door and a 5-door model. I have a sneaky suspicion SA will only get the 5-door.

It will present good value if VW prices it in the sub R250k bracket!
