NEW ENTRY-LEVEL PORSCHE TO REVIVE 550 SPYDER?

A new, modern version of the iconic Porsche 550 Spyder could be on its way into production. German newspaper Handelsblatt spoke to Porsche CEO Mattias Mueller who is quoted as saying “I can imagine that such a modern version of the famous ‘James Dean’ Porsche would be well-received by our customers”.

Obviously the man did not explicitly say a 550 Spyder revival was on the cards; he merely commented that it would probably be popular with his clients. So as much as we can get our hopes up, nothing is confirmed. The 550 Spyder means a lot if you are a Porsche or James Dean fan because the rising Hollywood star was killed in a crash at the age of 24 while driving the old super car.

Such a car would be an entry-level model, meaning it falls below the Cayman and the Boxster. A possible engine would be a 2.5-litre turbo motor (I imagine the same from Audi’s TT RS and RS 3 Sportback).
