NISSAN PLANNING ASSAULT ON GOLF, ASTRA, FOCUS

With Nissan enjoying vibrant sales of cars like the Juke and Qashqai, it would be nice to see the brand taking on Opel, Ford, Volkswagen and Toyota head-on once again, like in the good old days. For this to happen, a strong youth-oriented hatchback and sedan need to appear. Something like the Sentra for instance. Our wish may very well come true.

Nissan announced that it will start building a new compact hatchback at its factory in Sunderland, England, from 2014. Some R1.6 billion is being ploughed to make this happen. The new unnamed car will share the same platform as the LEAF electric car.

Not since the Sabre of the 1990s has Nissan produced anything worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Golf, Focus, Astra and the like. There’s even an opportunity here to fire up a hot performance hatch to take on such distinguished club members as Renault Megane RS. We can only hope and dream.
