One more step taken toward the next Audi RS 6 (and a possible RS 7) as Ingolstadt unveils the all-new S6 and its S7 sibling. S6 sits just below the RS 6 and will now ditch its old 5.2 V10 for an all-new 4.0-litre V8 twin turbo petrol.
Just quickly on the engine, it’s a new thing with 409kW and 550Nm, encouraged by two turbos. Notice it makes as much power as the old RS 4. The torque is maintained between 1400rpm and 5300rpm, driven by a 7-speed S Tronic double-clutch gearbox and all four wheels (quattro). The 0 – 100km/h time is achieved in 4.8 seconds, and top speed comes to an electronically limited 250km/h.
Average fuel consumption is said to be 9.7 litres per 100km, partly because of the engine’s ability to shut off four of the eight cylinders. S6 comes standard fitted with the adaptive air suspension system with sport undertones. It also has a set of seven different rims in either 19-inch or 20-inch size. Tyres are sized 255/40.
The S6 weighs 1895kg and is actually 16 millimetres longer than the new A6. Other differences include the front grille with chrome horizontal double bars, a chrome strip on the front bumper and side mirrors with an aluminium look. A rather discreet boot spoiler adorn the rear end, which features four exhaust tailpipes, just like all the other S cars. You’ll also notice S6 and V8T badges on the car, all of which give away its performance credentials.
Audi SA has confirmed the S6 will not be at the Johannesburg International Motor Show (JIMS), but has said nothing about selling the car locally. You’ll remember two generations ago, both S6 and RS 6 were sold, but one generation ago the S6 made way for the 426kW RS 6.
