Fiat, for the first time in the history of the competition, dominated the 2011 International Engine of the Year Awards as it took home 6 of the 12 awards, including one by Ferrari. The 875cc (0.9-litre) TwinAir engine was named overall 2011 International Engine of the Year. It also won Best New Engine, helping Fiat become only the second manufacturer after BMW to win this category for two years in a row.
The Italians didn’t stop there however. Fiat also took the Green Engine of the year using the same engine. For this it beat out Toyota’s hybrid powertrain and Nissan’s LEAF system into second and third spot respectively. TwinAir then went on to take the sub-1-litre category win as well. Sister company Ferrari swept the Best Performance Engine award as well as the Above 4.0-litre category with its 4.5-litre from the 458 Italia.
Not to be left out, BMW, an ever-present force in these awards, completely dominated the small to upper mid-section when it snapped up four category wins. Those were the '1.4-litre to 1.8-litre' category for its 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo engine co-produced with PSA Peugeot Citroën, the 1.8-litre to 2.0-litre category for its 2-litre Twin Turbo diesel engine found in the 123d and X1, 2.5-litre to 3.0-litre category for the DI Twin Turbo and the 3.0-litre to 4.0-litre category with the M3’s high-revving 309kW V8 engine.
Europe’s biggest automaker Volkswagen rounded up the winners by snatching the 1.0-litre to 1.4-litre crown with its 1.4-litre TSI Twincharger motor.
