Porsche has finally put paid to speculation that it would build a hybrid model of the hot Panamera model. Of course with Porsche making hybrids and hybrid concepts left right and centre, it was only a matter of time that the Pan also got some mixed treatment.
The Panamera S Hybrid, as it’s known, will use a 3.0-litre V6 engine with a supercharger unit as the basis for its petrol part of the system. Incidentally Audi also has a 3.0-litre V6 engine with a supercharger. Mmhh, in-breeding already, are we? On the electric side is an electric motor making 34kW, thanks to the nickel metal hydride battery (NiMh) system. A strange choice considering most other manufacturers now use lithium-ion batteries. In total it puts out 279kW. Torque figures were not supplied.
As far as figures are concerned, Porsche says it will go from 0 - 100km/h in 6 seconds flat and reach a top end of 270km/h. Remember, Porsche is not part of the German triumvirate who agreed some years ago that limiting their cars’ top speeds to 250km/h would be the best idea since shoes with sharp heels. Average fuel consumption is said to be 6.8 litres per 100km when running Michelin low resistance tyres, while C02 emissions are 159 g/km. Otherwise one can get 7.1 litres per 100km with standard issue rubber. With such boastful numbers the Panamera S Hybrid can lay claim to being the most fuel-efficient Porsche of all time.
The car will be shown at the 2011 Geneva International Motor Show and subsequently carry a €106 185 / R1.04 million (VAT included) price tag in Germany. If enough of you knock hard enough on Porsche South Africa’s door you will also get one, at a slightly higher price than this.
