The beautiful Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet, are now much more accessible, thanks to a new smaller, more efficient engine. Costing just over R600 000 for the Coupe, the new E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY petrol units are gunning for the volume market of this exclusive segment, if you’ve ever read a contradiction in terms.
“The new E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY in the CoupĂ© and Cabriolet variant offers customers stylistic exclusivity and sporty excitement. This latest-generation direct injection petrol engine is fuel efficient and low on emissions, despite its top performance in terms of torque, output and noise reduction,” says Eckart Mayer, the boss of Mercedes-Benz Car Division in South Africa.
Underpinning the cars is a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder turbo motor which produces 150kW and 310Nm of torque between 2000rpm and 4300rpm. Curiously they have used a 5-speed automatic, instead of the 7-speed automatic for these two cars. Average fuel usage is quoted at 7.2 litres per 100km and C02 emissions are 167 g/km.
Mercedes-Benz has fitted a comfort-oriented Agility Control suspension as standard, while a harder suspension setting can be had as an optional extra. The system responds to driver feedback as well as road situations. Optional also are things like LED daytime running lights and a headlamp wash system among others. Buyers will not have to pay extra in order to acquire the AMG Sports package with AMG body styling, 18-inch wheels, AMG sports steering wheel with shift paddles and so on.
For those who hate quietness in their cars is an extra-cost Harman Kardon sound system with Logic7 which comes with surround sound. Its Comand APS can store around 1 200 songs in MP3/WMA or AAC formats, which means no more driving around with scratchable CDs.
All these and more are available in the new E 250 CGI Coupe and Cabriolet models.
