January car sales showed some positive growth as car companies continued with rallies seen last year, following a very tough 2009/ 2010 selling
season. Sales increased by 15.4% over
December 2011. But remember that these figures are guesstimations because companies like Daimler SA and Associated
Motor Holdings, are not telling what they are selling. The two distribute Mercedes-Benz
and Hyundai/ Kia brands in SA respectively.
“Total vehicle sales of 9
803 in January saw Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) top the total
market in the first month of the year – with a 21.3% market share. Its market share in the passenger vehicle
category was even more pleasing, at 25.5%
with sales of 9 003,” said VWSA Sales and Marketing Director, Mike Glendinning. Audi sold 1 715 cars to
capture 4.8% of the total market.
“With improved supply of Ranger as production capacity increases, the continued
success of Figo and Fiesta and new
products such as Kuga, Ford is
well-positioned to capitalise on continued South African new vehicle market
growth this year,” said Dean Stoneley,
FMCSA’s Vice President Marketing, Sales and Service. “More exciting Mazda
products will also be added to our mix,
allowing FMCSA to continue contributing towards the group’s mid-decade outlook.”
