Toyota began selling hybrid cars in August of 1997 with the Coaster Hybrid EV. In December of the same year the first-generation Prius debuted in Japan. Since then the company has sold a remarkable 3 million hybrids of different types and shapes.
Toyota South Africa only sells the Prius under its own brand, while the Lexus division has several models running hybrid systems. In total 16 different hybrids are sold in 80 countries. That includes Prius, sedans, SUVs and other shapes. The push won’t stop there as Toyota is planning on introducing 10 more hybrids by the end of 2012, six of which will be brand new cars while four will be updates of existing ones.
