Hot on the smoking tyres of the all-new Audi A8 4.2 V8 comes the new V8 TDI model. Audi launched the petrol 4.2 V8 as the only model in the new range last year and has now augmented it with a large turbo diesel. During the launch Audi executives explained the brand’s change in direction from diesel-intensive to a petrol-based one, given the types of engines that sell best at this level in SA.
The new car is fitted with a 4.2-litre TDI which features twin turbos and kicks out 258kW of power. Maximum torque is 800Nm. This means it’s the most powerful diesel car in its segment at the moment. Torque and power are sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed Tiptronic gearbox with a sports differential torque vectoring system as standard equipment.
Audi claims average C02 levels of 199 g/km despite sprightly performance figures of 6.2 seconds for the 0 – 100km/h run and a top speed of 250km/h.
This is after all, a range-topping luxury car, so comfort creatures are plenty splashed out. Included on the list of standard stuff are 22-way adjustable comfort front seats, MMI 3G with satnav, dynamic steering and xenon headlights.
The new Audi A8 4.2 TDI can be ordered from the nearest Audi dealership immediately. Other models expected to land this year are the 3.0 T supercharged and the 3.0 TDI.
